Using the CLI

Once you've accessed the CLI, you can configure, monitor, and manage the device. Cisco IOS Software is a modal operating system, which means that it has multiple operational modes, each with its own set of commands customized to specific functions.

To interact with the CLI, you can configure or paste commands within specific console command modes, each identified by a distinct visual prompt, indicating that the system is ready for input.

Each command mode has a name and a unique visual prompt that typically starts with the device name, followed by the current mode. As you enter commands and switch between modes, the prompt changes to reflect the current mode. To execute a command, you simply need to enter the command and press Enter, assuming it is in the correct form.

IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that commands are executed immediately upon entry, so incorrect ones can disrupt the normal network behavior on production devices.
