HSRP Advanced Features
Besides using the basic HSRP functionalities which are more than sufficient for uninterrupted communication in more use cases within networks, you can also configure some additional HSRP features:
- Interface tracking: This is a feature that allows a router to track the status of an interface and adjust its HSRP priority accordingly. This means that if the interface goes down, the router's priority is reduced, and another router with a higher priority can take over as the active HSRP router. Interface tracking helps ensure that traffic is always forwarded through the most optimal path in the network.
- Object tracking: This feature allows a router to track the status of a specified object, such as an interface or an IP address. This feature improves network redundancy by allowing the router to automatically switch to a standby router if the active router fails or if a specific object is unreachable. Essentially, object tracking enables HSRP to provide a more reliable and fault-tolerant network infrastructure.
