Console Port
You must use the console port when connecting to a switch for the first time (or a switch without any configuration). This port can be an RJ-45 or a USB (USB type B mini port), with some models supporting both options.
For an RJ-45 console port connection, you need a console cable with an RJ-45 connector on one end for the switch and a USB or DB-9 (serial) connector on the other for the management computer.
The image above provides a view of the console port on a switch and different console cable types you can use.
Since many modern computers lack a DB-9 serial connector, using a cable with a USB connector is recommended. In this case, you'll require a serial-to-USB adapter to establish connectivity with the end device.
Important: Keep in mind that on switches that support two console ports, only one can be active at a time, either the RJ-45 or the USB port. When a cable is plugged into the USB console port, the RJ-45 port becomes inactive, and vice versa.
